THE RETURN OF PHYNEUS P
Hi Everyone!
If you'd be so kind after you've read this excerpt, could you give us your comments and a rating and also give us a vote?

We're hoping to capture the interest of children between the ages of 12 and 14, should anyone wonder.

Thanks a million!
Allyson & Tamsin

A fearsome warrior just returned from battle to his adoring wife and new hatchling.

Phyneus
P. the Older, a Warrior Dragon, and the last “Dragoon” male desperately
wanted a son. Should he be killed in battle before producing an heir,
it would mean the end of the Dragoon dynasty.

A
battle worn Phyneus P., preparing for the journey home, couldn’t fathom
out Portencia’s description of their new hatchling in the letter she
sent just after Phyneus P. Junior was hatched. .

What
on earth did Portencia mean by fluff? The statement she made of his
“lighting up a room” had him really stumped. Did he shine like a
brightly burning candle? Was that possible? It didn’t matter to him if
Phyneus P. Junior were freakish looking. He was his son and he would
love him anyway.

Morning
dawned early, finding Phyneus P. on the last leg of his journey home,
wings weary and bone tired. Flying over the Hugglebugg Forest and
nearing home, Phyneus P remembered vividly his boyhood and how happy
and carefree it had been. Phyneus P. would do everything in his power
for Phynnie’s to be the same.

The
great Warrior Dragon landed with quiet precision on the roof of Dragoon
Castle then, wrapping himself in his cape, dashed down the staircase in
search of his family. But it was Gracie he first laid eyes on.
Portencia’s servant beckoned him into the antechamber.

The Warrior Dragon’s hackles rose, fearing the worst.

“Welcome back Sire,” said Gracie, curtseying.

“Thank
you Gracie but, tell me truly, is our son a Mongolian Dragon?” Phyneus
P. went on to tell Gracie he cared not. He would love his son
regardless.

Gracie smiled. “Calm yourself Phyneus P., your son isn’t Mongolian but he is what you could call ‘special’.”

“I
can tell you this, Phynnie is breathtakingly lovely and a pleasure to
look upon, Sire. There is something a little surprising though. He was
not born the Royal Elfin colour of Gossamer Green nor does he take your
or Portencia’s colouring.” Phyneus P. opened his mouth to say something
but Gracie didn’t give him the chance.

“Who’s
to say Phynnie’s not a throwback, born the colour of one of the
Triwilliger or Dragoon dragons from centuries back?” queried Gracie.

Stepping
forward, Gracie took Phyneus P.’s hand and kissed the back of it,
formally, before departing the antechamber, leaving him alone to digest
this possibility.

As
Phyneus P. stood in the antechamber, he heard Portencia thrumping along
the hall in his direction and smiled lovingly. What a ‘fragile flower’
she was, so delicate and light on her feet. He couldn’t wait to take
her in his arms and give her a lip-smacking smooch she wouldn’t soon
forget. Just as she was about to walk by the door, the Warrior Dragon,
his blood boiling with amour, reached out to pull her into his arms, a
serious mistake.

“Help, I’m being accosted,” shrieked a hysterical Portencia.

Portencia,
grabbed from behind, wasn’t able see the face of her foe, but even so
she immediately whipped her massive tail around ramming it straight
into this blackguard’s chest. Down with a thunderous boom went this
dastardly deviant who, surprisingly, wasn’t putting up much of a fight.
Releasing lengthy flashes of her fiery breath straight into the
attacker’s face, Portencia was instantly gratified upon hearing this
devil dragon’s painful shrieks.

As
Portencia roughly lifted the monster’s head you could have heard a pin
drop. The charred and brutalized face belonged to her dear adorable
husband, Phyneus P.

“Oh my good grief,” wailed Portencia, “what have I done?”

Portencia
quickly looked around praying nobody had witnessed the near massacre
and, satisfied they were quite alone, tenderly stroked Phyneus P’s
scorched eyebrows and gently kissed his barbecued nose. Phyneus P.’s
long eyelashes, every woman’s dream, were no more; she’d singed them
right down to the nub.

“Phyneus P,” sobbed Portencia slapping his cheeks harder and harder, hoping her efforts would finally bring him around.

Unbeknownst
to Portencia, her giant salty tears were soaking into Phyneus P.’s
blistered face, causing her husband even more excruciating pain, a pain
so horrendous the force of it bolted the fearsome Warrior Dragon into a
sitting position, knocking both their heads together. Phyneus P., in
further agony, fell back hitting the back of his head on the rocky
floor and he let out another guttural scream. Once the Warrior Dragon
ceased to flail, Portencia cradled her husband’s head and watched,
thankfully, as Phyneus P. opening his lash-less eyes, pleaded with her
to name the cur that had the audacity to attack and perform arson upon
his person.

“Phyneus
P., please don’t excite yourself so, you’ve already been through
enough. I have no idea who could have done this to you,” professed
Portencia, lying through her teeth.

Portencia,
humoring Phyneus P., called for the castle guards, imploring them to
search every corner of the castle and beyond its walls for the violent
intruder who dared to attack her brave warrior husband in the sanctity
of his home.
